World Fossil Finder Museum

One of the Black Hills' most unique paleontology attractions, The World Fossil Finder Museum in Hot Springs, South Dakota isn't your typical fossil museum. Of the fossils on display, most are original specimens, and 75% were personally discovered by founder and self-taught paleontologist Frank Garcia. The centerpiece is "Debby Sue," a well-preserved Tylosaurus (a massive Cretaceous-era marine reptile) unearthed near Edgemont, SD, with a skull measuring over five feet long. The museum also features the Leisey Shell Pit exhibit, representing the earliest and richest Ice Age fossil discovery in the world. Garcia has discovered more than 20 previously unknown prehistoric species, and many of those one-of-a-kind finds are on display here. Kids receive free fossils, staff are knowledgeable and passionate, and visitors can peer into the fossil preparation area to watch work in progress. Garcia is often onsite, leading tours and answering questions. The World Fossil Finder Museum is a must-see stop for anyone who enjoys learning more about dinosaurs or other prehistoric creatures!
