Willow Creek Trailhead

This loop trail at the edge of the Black Elk Wilderness travels through pine and aspen forest, follows Willow Creek to a small scenic waterfall, and passes unique granite rock formations with views of Black Elk Peak in the distance. The 2.8-mile loop is easy throughout, with more than half the hike in shade — making it one of the best family trails near Mount Rushmore. You'll reach Willow Creek about a third of the way through, where you can take a break, cool your feet in the water, and enjoy the stream-fed waterfall just upstream. Hike it clockwise for the most gradual approach and best views early on. For those wanting more, the trailhead also launches Trail #9 to Black Elk Peak — the highest point east of the Rockies — about 10.7 miles round trip. Trail #9 also connects east to Horsethief Lake and Mount Rushmore for a full-day adventure. The Lost Cabin Trail branches off about a quarter of the way into the loop for additional exploring. The trailhead is located at Willow Creek Horse Camp. Open to hikers, horseback riders, and leashed dogs.
