My favorite hike in the Black Hills! This is an incredible descent into a stunning canyon that follows a rambling creek. Shade, picture opps, etc.
Custer State Park: Sunday Gulch Trailhead
About
Sunday Gulch Trailhead is located near Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park, about 10 minutes from Custer and 30 minutes from Hill City. The Sunday Gulch Trail is a 3.5-mile loop and is considered moderately difficult due to steep sections, stone steps, and uneven terrain.
The trail descends into a narrow gorge filled with boulders, small waterfalls, and flowing water, offering one of the most unique hiking experiences in the Black Hills. Handrails and stairs help navigate the more challenging sections, but sturdy footwear is recommended. With its dramatic scenery and central location near popular attractions, Sunday Gulch is a must-do hike for adventurous visitors.
