Sundance Trail System #93

The Sundance Trail System winds through the scenic Bearlodge Mountains, offering a mix of densely forested canyons and open ridges with incredible views. From some ridge tops, visitors can spot Devils Tower, the Twin Missouri Buttes, and even the historic Custer Expedition Route. The system is well-recognized for excellent mountain biking thanks to its rough topography, with bypasses designed specifically for more technical riding — especially the South Fork Tent and Edge Trails. The full system totals over 47 miles of trail open to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, ranging from moderate to difficult terrain with 4,600 to 6,200 feet of elevation. Wildlife is abundant throughout — elk, deer, and wild turkey are regularly spotted, and the trails provide one of the most primitive and secluded recreation experiences in the Black Hills. The full trail covers 12.3 miles with 2,099 feet of elevation gain, taking most hikers six or more hours to complete. The primary trailhead is accessed from County Road 123, 3.5 miles north of Sundance.
