Spring Creek Picnic Area

The Spring Creek Picnic Area is a peaceful day-use stop tucked along Spring Creek, 8 miles west of Rapid City on Sheridan Lake Road. Eight picnic sites sit in an open woodland of ponderosa pine, oak, willow, and cottonwood — shaded, quiet, and well-maintained by the Forest Service. The creek runs directly alongside the picnic sites, making this one of the most scenic roadside stops in the Black Hills. Visitors regularly spot deer, birds, and small wildlife along the creek bank. The area is especially beautiful in fall when the cottonwoods and oaks turn gold. Restrooms are available on site. Day use only — open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. A day-use fee applies. The Spring Creek Trailhead, which accesses both the Flume Trail and Centennial Trail, is located just 6 miles further southwest on Sheridan Lake Road. Sheridan Lake's swimming beaches, marina, and campgrounds are also nearby.
