Spearfish Recreational Trail

The Spearfish Recreation Trail stretches 11.5 miles along Spearfish Creek, weaving through the heart of the city before following the old Burlington Northern railroad grade out to the mouth of Spearfish Canyon — one of the most scenic corridors in the northern Black Hills. The trail passes through City Park and Brady Park, where the Saturday Farmers Market sets up each summer morning, and runs adjacent to Black Hills State University, Spearfish High School, and Spearfish Middle School. The D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery — constructed in 1899 and still operating — anchors the southern end of the city section, with an on-site museum, educational exhibits, picnic areas, and resident ducks and trout to delight younger visitors. Beyond the city, the trail transitions into canyon country, hugging Spearfish Creek as towering limestone walls close in on either side — a dramatic finish to what begins as an easygoing town stroll. Parking is available at various parks along the trail.
