Spearfish Falls

A stunning 47-foot waterfall tucked into Spearfish Canyon — accessible to nearly everyone.

About

Spearfish Falls is a breathtaking 47-foot waterfall located directly behind the Latchstring Restaurant in Spearfish Canyon, one of the most celebrated natural areas in the Black Hills. It's one of three iconic waterfalls along the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, alongside Roughlock Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. The trail to the falls is a ¾-mile out-and-back route that descends just over 100 feet and is handicap accessible, open year-round. Along the way, hikers pass through lush greenery with benches placed at scenic points, and a large wooden viewing platform at the base provides an up-close look at the waterfall. In summer, wildflowers line the trail, and in fall, visitors come from around the world to experience the falls alongside the brilliant foliage of Spearfish Canyon. In winter, mist from the falls builds on surrounding rocks and trees, creating a striking frozen landscape. The broader Spearfish Canyon Nature Area also offers excellent birding, wildlife viewing, and fishing.
