Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway

This 19-mile designated State Byway winds through towering limestone cliffs and vibrant scenery, drawing nature lovers, families, and photographers year-round. Following Highway 14A along Spearfish Creek from the city of Spearfish south to Cheyenne Crossing, the canyon is one of the most dramatic and accessible scenic drives in the Black Hills. Three waterfalls anchor the route. Bridal Veil Falls cascades down a sheer 60-foot cliff right alongside the road, while Roughlock Falls and Spearfish Falls reward those who step out for a short hike. Wildlife abounds throughout the canyon — mountain goats, deer, eagles, and rainbow and cutthroat trout in the creek below. Fall is especially spectacular, when the canyon fills with yellows, golds, and reds Black Hills & Badlands that draw visitors from across the country. Movie buffs take note: the final winter scene of the 1990 film Dances with Wolves was filmed in the canyon near Roughlock Falls.
