South Dakota Air & Space Museum

The South Dakota Air & Space Museum tells the distinguished history of Ellsworth Air Force Base, the 44th Strategic Missile Wing, and the 28th Bomb Wing through the Cold War era U.S. — and it won't cost you a dime to explore it. On the grounds are 30 displays of military aircraft including bombers and fighter jets, among them a B-29 Superfortress, B-52 Stratofortress, and a massive B-1B Lancer visible from the interstate. Indoor displays include artifacts from the 1935 Stratobowl manned-balloon flights, a joint Army and National Geographic Society mission launched from the Black Hills, in which two men became the first to reach an altitude where they could photograph the earth's curvature. Four interior galleries cover aerospace technology, the World Wars, the Cold War, aviation pioneers, and the South Dakota Aviation Hall of Fame, plus interactive cockpit trainers and missile displays.
