Skyline Wilderness Area: Stonewall Overlook Trailhead

A WPA-built stone wall, 100-mile mountain views, and singletrack trails — right in Rapid City.

About

The Stonewall Overlook is a beautifully preserved stone wall perched at the crest of the Dakota Hogback Ridge, offering some of the finest views in the Skyline Wilderness Area — sweeping panoramas of the Black Hills to the west and Rapid City sprawling across the prairie below. On a clear day, the view stretches nearly 100 miles in either direction. Located along Skyline Drive, you'll enjoy switchback singletrack paths that wind through ponderosa pine and oak, with glimpses of the Black Hills appearing through the trees along the trail and at the overlook at the top. There's a small pull-off for parking. The Stonewall Overlook sits within the 150-acre Skyline Wilderness Area — a network of singletrack trails open to hikers and mountain bikers, connecting Petrified Forest Trailhead, Dinosaur Park, and Stonewall Overlook. Trails are singletrack, open to hikers and mountain bikers. Dogs welcome on leash.
