Skyline Wilderness Area: Dinosaur Park

Dinosaur Park was dedicated on May 22, 1936, as a WPA project featuring seven life-sized concrete dinosaur sculptures perched along Dakota Hogback Ridge — designed by lawyer and sculptor Emmit Sullivan on a metal pipe and wire mesh frame. Built to attract visitors traveling to Mount Rushmore, it has become one of Rapid City's most iconic landmarks. The park serves as a trailhead for the Skyline Wilderness Trail, a 150-acre network of urban wilderness with excellent hiking and mountain biking. The Dinosaur Park Trailhead is the northern anchor of the system, with trails heading south along the ridge toward the Petrified Forest Trailhead, Stonewall Overlook, the WPA Amphitheater site, and Cerro Court. Parking, restrooms, and a gift shop are all on site at 940 Skyline Drive. Free admission. Dogs welcome on leash.
