Sheridan Lake

Sheridan Lake sits 15 miles west of Rapid City in the heart of the Black Hills, making it one of the most accessible and well-equipped outdoor destinations in western South Dakota. At 383 acres with 7.5 miles of shoreline, the lake features two swimming beaches, public boat launches, and a full-service marina. Anglers can fish for trout, northern pike, perch, bass, and other panfish. Fly fishing is popular in Spring Creek below the dam and ice fishing draws crowds in the winter. Boaters and water sports enthusiasts can rent watercraft at the marina, while kayakers enjoy the clear, calm water year-round. Trailheads for both the Flume Trail and the Centennial Trail are located lakeside, and are ideal for hikers and mountain bikers. The lake was built in 1939 over the site of Sheridan, the original county seat of Pennington County, adding a layer of history to its natural beauty. The south shore hosts the largest campground in Black Hills National Forest, with 129 sites. Mount Rushmore is less than 30 minutes away.
