Rock Maze

Giant boulders, natural tunnels, and pine-top views on Nemo Road — a free, family-friendly Black Hills gem just 14 miles northwest of Rapid City.

About

The Rock Maze is located on Nemo Road about 14 miles northwest of Rapid City, directly across from the Steamboat Rock Recreation Area. It's one of those under-the-radar Black Hills stops that rewards anyone who pulls over — free, fascinating, and genuinely fun for all ages. The maze consists of giant sandstone and granite boulders that have separated and cracked over time, creating natural corridors, tunnels, and passageways to navigate. Large boulders lean in all directions, forming natural tunnels to explore, and climbing to the top delivers gorgeous views of rolling ponderosa pine forest. Reviewers consistently say there's something new to discover on every visit — the area extends south, north, and above the main boulder field. The trail itself is a half-mile out-and-back with 144 feet of elevation gain, taking most visitors 30 to 45 minutes — though families with kids often spend much longer. Watch for poison ivy along the edges of the boulder field. Parking is available at the Steamboat Rock Recreation Area across the road.
