Pilot Knob Motorized Trailhead

Pilot Knob Trailhead is a major recreation hub in the northern Black Hills, located off Highway 385 about 25 minutes from Rapid City and 20 minutes from Deadwood. It's often considered one of the central access points for trail activity in the area. From the trailhead, visitors can access sections of the Centennial Trail, including routes like the 3.5 to 4 mile segment toward Deer Creek or longer out-and-back hikes up to 7 to 8 miles total. The terrain is generally moderate, with rolling elevation, forested paths, and a mix of singletrack and wider trail sections. The area is popular for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and OHV use, with connections to multiple trail systems. Due to its popularity, it can be busy in summer, but it remains a top starting point for exploring the northern Black Hills. OHV riders are required to have permits for 62-inch trails.
