Skyline Wilderness Area: Petrified Forest Trailhead

The Petrified Forest Trailhead is the primary access point for the Skyline Wilderness Area, a 150-acre expanse of undeveloped forest and meadow along Dakota Hogback Ridge — the prominent limestone ridge that bisects Rapid City into its eastern and western halves. The trail system is a network of secluded singletrack trails open to hikers and mountain bikers. Six trailheads allow visitors to mix and match routes, with round-trip distances ranging from 3 to 6 miles and a maximum elevation gain of 891 feet. Trails range from easy to moderate, with narrow paths, some steep drop-offs, and sections that can be muddy after rain. Start from the Petrified Forest Trailhead and work your way down to the Amphitheater for the best wildflower-spotting opportunities in spring, when pasqueflowers line the trail. The route passes several points of historical interest, including the Stonewall Overlook, Hangman's Tree, and Dinosaur Park.
