Petrified Forest of the Black Hills

Located just 15 minutes north of Rapid City, The Black Hills' Petrified Forest offers a rare glimpse into a world 120 million years in the making. The site was famously established near the 1889 discovery site of a mighty Brachiosaurus, setting the stage for a journey through deep time. Your visit begins with an educational video explaining the fascinating process of petrification; how ancient logs were buried by sediment and volcanic ash, slowly transforming from wood to vibrant stone through mineral replacement. After the intro, you’ll explore a museum filled with polished specimens, local fossils, and rare minerals. The highlight, however, is the nature trail. This mile-long hike takes you through the "forest" itself, where massive fossilized logs remain embedded in the landscape just as they were found. To top off the experience, the Gallery of Stone rock shop allows you to take a piece of geological history home with you.
