Mount Moriah Cemetery

Perched on a plateau above Deadwood Gulch, Mount Moriah Cemetery is one of the most storied burial grounds in the American West. Established in 1878, it holds the graves of outlaws, gamblers, madams, lawmen, and pioneers who built Deadwood's wild reputation during the Black Hills Gold Rush. Its most famous resident is Wild Bill Hickok, shot dead in a saloon while holding his legendary "dead man's hand." Buried beside him is Calamity Jane, whose dying wish was to rest at his side. Nearby lie lawman Seth Bullock and Reverend Henry Weston "Preacher" Smith. Beyond the celebrity graves, Mount Moriah is a beautifully preserved Late Victorian cemetery, with paved paths winding past ornate headstones. The hilltop setting offers sweeping views of Deadwood and the pine-covered hills, especially at sunset. Spend at least thirty minutes exploring.
