Mickelson Trail: Lead Trailhead

Sitting just 11 miles from the northern end of the iconic Mickelson Trail, the Lead Trailhead is one of the most historically rich access points on the entire 109-mile route. Nestled close to the Homestake Mine, the Lead Trailhead offers parking, restrooms, and services for trail users — and a front-row view of the massive Homestake Open Cut, one of the most dramatic geological landmarks in the Black Hills. From Lead, the trail heads north toward Deadwood through some of the most scenic and strenuous terrain on the route. The 17-mile stretch from Deadwood to Dumont is an uphill climb heading south. The Lead Trailhead also sits near the split for the Sugarloaf Fantail Loop, a western alternate route that adds about 2 miles and passes through the Sugarloaf Trailhead before reconnecting with the main trail north of Englewood. Trail passes are required: $5/day or $20/annually, available at the self-serve station at the trailhead. Shuttle services are available from several Black Hills outfitters for one-way rides.
