Memorial Park

Memorial Park is the heart of Rapid City — a 27.5-acre green space along Rapid Creek, just north of downtown. Born out of the devastating 1972 flood that claimed 238 lives, the park stands as both a tribute to those lost and a vibrant community gathering place. At its center is Memorial Pond, stocked with rainbow trout and perfect for a peaceful moment. The Flood Memorial Fountain honors the victims of 1972, while the Legacy Statue by local artist Dale Lamphere celebrates South Dakota's history. History buffs will love the Berlin Wall exhibit, featuring two original panels with plaques connecting Cold War history to Rapid City's own ties to the Berlin Airlift. Families enjoy the Legacy Commons Playground, paved creek-side pathways ideal for walking or biking, and a band shell that hosts summer concerts and the city's Fourth of July fireworks.
