Lookout Mountain Park

Lookout Mountain Park encompasses 756 acres of mountain parkland on the edge of Spearfish, rising from 3,650 feet at the base to a summit of 4,452 feet. It's the closest peak to downtown Spearfish and one of the most beloved outdoor destinations in the northern Black Hills. The hogback ridgeline exposes striking bands of white gypsum and red sandstone against green vegetation, and the park is forested primarily with ponderosa pine, bur oak, and ironwood, with open grassy areas throughout. Recreation opportunities include hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The park contains a series of interconnected trails covering more than 14 miles of rugged and often steep terrain, with routes accessible from two trailheads. The Nevada Street trailhead offers the most parking and takes hikers under I-90 via a tunnel, while a second access point is available off Pony Express Lane in the Sandstone development. The summit rewards visitors with beautiful views of Spearfish below and Crow Peak in the distance.
