Little Elk Creek Trailhead
About
Little Elk Creek Trail is a scenic and adventurous route in the central Black Hills, beginning near Dalton Lake off Highway 385 and stretching roughly 10 to 12 miles toward the Elk Creek area near Piedmont. This moderately challenging trail follows Little Elk Creek through a mix of pine forest, open meadows, and rolling terrain, offering a more immersive backcountry experience than nearby loop trails.
It’s especially popular for mountain biking, as well as hiking and trail running, with gradual elevation changes and varied landscapes along the way. The trail provides a quieter, less crowded alternative to more well-known routes, while still being conveniently located about 15 minutes from Hill City and 25 minutes from Rapid City. With its natural beauty and versatility, Little Elk Creek Trail is a favorite for those seeking a longer, more rugged Black Hills adventure.
