Legion Lake Trail

The Legion Lake Trail is an easy 1-mile loop that winds through ponderosa pine forest along the shoreline of Legion Lake — one of the quieter lakes in Custer State Park and a favorite among visitors looking for a peaceful alternative to the busier Sylvan Lake. The trail hugs the water's edge for much of its length, offering continuous views of the lake and its signature granite rock formations rising from the surface. Lenker Rock is the most photographed feature along the route — a dramatic outcropping that reflects beautifully in the still water on calm mornings. Minor rock scrambling adds a little texture to the otherwise easy terrain, and the full loop takes most hikers just 15 to 20 minutes to complete. Bison and deer are commonly spotted in the area, particularly in the morning and evening hours. The trail begins at the Legion Lake Lodge parking lot on Highway 16A, with a second smaller lot closer to the trailhead through the campground. A swim beach is located near the lodge, making it easy to combine the hike with a dip in the lake.
