Highland Creek Trailhead

Highland Creek Trail is a 8.7 mile hike through forest and meadows near Deerfield Lake.

About

Highland Creek Trailhead is located in Wind Cave National Park, about 15 minutes north of Hot Springs, South Dakota, and provides access to a remote and scenic backcountry hike. The Highland Creek Trail is approximately 8.7 mile (total) out and back and takes about six hours to complete. It's considered moderate to difficult due to rolling terrain, creek crossings, and exposure to open prairie. The trail follows Highland Creek through a mix of grassland and ponderosa pine forest, offering a unique blend of landscapes within the park. It’s well known for wildlife viewing, with opportunities to see bison, elk, pronghorn, and prairie dogs along the route. With minimal development and fewer crowds, this trail offers a more rugged and immersive experience compared to more popular Black Hills hikes.
