Wind Cave Park: East Bison Flats Trail

East Bison Flats Trail in Wind Cave National Park is a moderate 6-mile out-and-back hike (about 3 miles each way) that showcases the park’s unique mix of rolling prairie and ponderosa pine forest. The trail gradually climbs from open grasslands into higher terrain, offering expansive views of the southern Black Hills along the way. This area is prime habitat for wildlife, and hikers often spot bison, elk, and prairie dogs, so keeping a safe distance is important. The trail is well-marked but relatively exposed in sections, so sun protection and water are recommended. Located just north of Hot Springs, it’s a quieter alternative to busier Black Hills trails and a great way to experience the park’s diverse landscape.
