Dugout Gulch Botanical Trail

Dugout Gulch Botanical Trail #77 is located in the Wyoming Black Hills, 6 miles south of Beulah, near the historic Ranch A property. The trail consists of a 2.3-mile spur that connects to a 4.4-mile loop — hiked in full, the route totals around 9 miles. It's one of the most rewarding and least-crowded trails in the northern Black Hills. The first two miles follow a peaceful creek through dense forest, with a lush, almost rainforest-like feel. The trail winds along steep hillsides and occasional cliffs, with small pools of water for cooling off, and crosses the stream multiple times on bridges and log crossings. Limestone rock formations, many varieties of plants, and abundant wildlife — including bald eagles, deer, wild turkey, and elk — make this a standout botanical experience. The drive in along Forest Road 863 is itself a highlight, offering gorgeous views of red sandstone on the western face of the Black Hills. A picnic table sits at the trailhead and wooden benches are placed along the spur. Open to hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing.
