Dougherty Trailhead

Located near the historic site of Mystic, the Dougherty Trailhead is a unique junction for two of the Black Hills’ most iconic trail systems. This peaceful access point serves as a vital link between the rugged, backcountry Deerfield Trail (#40) and the world-famous George S. Mickelson Trail. It is a favorite for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders seeking a blend of high-meadow scenery and deep-canyon views. From here, you can head northwest toward Deerfield Reservoir through pristine ponderosa pine forests or hop onto the Mickelson Trail to traverse historic railroad grades and rock tunnels. Steeped in mining history, the landscape features a lush mix of aspen groves and granite outcrops. Because of its central location between Hill City and Rochford, Dougherty is an ideal staging area for "point-to-point" treks or long-distance loops, offering a quiet, low-traffic alternative to busier roadside trailheads.
