Deerfield Lake Loop Trailhead

A challenging 12-mile loop around a stunning Black Hills reservoir — solitude, views, and wildlife.

About

One of the most rewarding and least crowded long hikes in the Black Hills, the Deerfield Lake Loop Trail circles the entire perimeter of Deerfield Lake — one of the largest reservoirs in the region — in a challenging 12.2-mile loop with 1,433 feet of elevation gain. The trail winds through areas of tall pines and small meadows to the south, and opens up to sweeping lake views from Reynolds Prairie to the north. Highlights include beautiful white hill views and a true lake wilderness feel — it's rare to encounter other people out here. Hikers on horseback report the full loop is rideable, though one boggy section may require a short fence-line detour depending on the season. Trail markings can be unclear in spots, so a downloaded map is recommended. The lake itself is located about 20 miles west of Hill City and offers three campgrounds, two boat launches, and two picnic areas. The loop can be accessed from four trailheads: Custer Trail, North Shore, Hill Top, and Gold Run. Open to hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use. Dogs welcome on leash.
