Deer Field Trail #40
About
The Deerfield Trail is a 23-mile point-to-point trail connecting Deerfield Reservoir on the west end to the Centennial Trail near Pactola Lake on the east, traveling through some of the most remote and scenic terrain in Black Hills National Forest.
Between the Dougherty and Silver City Trailheads, the trail winds through deep canyons along both Slate Creek and Rapid Creek, crossing over 30 bridges. Sheer granite walls, rushing creek crossings, and dense pine forest define much of the middle section — the most dramatic and rewarding stretch of the route.
The trail averages around 6,000 feet in elevation, with a total elevation change of approximately 1,700 feet, and is open to hikers, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and cross-country skiers. The full point-to-point route covers 12.7 miles between the Deer Creek and Dougherty Trailheads and is rated difficult, taking most hikers five to six hours.
No fresh water is available along the trail — pack accordingly. Dogs are welcome on leash.
