Custer Trail Trailhead

One of four access points on the Deerfield Lake Loop Trail (#40L), the Custer Trail Trailhead sits on the north shore of the lake and is one of the most scenic starting points for the full loop. From here, hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrian riders can access the entire 10-mile circuit around Deerfield Lake — one of the largest and most remote reservoirs in the Black Hills. The trail winds through tall pines and small meadows to the south, and opens up to sweeping lake views from Reynolds Prairie to the north. The Custer Trail also connects to Deerfield Trail #40 at the eastern end of the loop — an 18-mile connector that links all the way to the Mickelson Trail and the Centennial Trail, making this a hub for longer multi-day adventures deep into the Black Hills backcountry.
