The Sylvan Lake Shore Trail is an easy 1.1-mile loop around Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park, one of the most scenic and popular destinations in the Black Hills.
Massive granite rock formations line much of the route, and the northwest section features boulder scrambling, stone steps up to rock tunnel. A narrow slot canyon carved through the granite is a standout feature and a favorite among visitors. Most of the trail is flat and family-friendly, with the crushed gravel path on the southwest side wide enough for strollers.
After hiking, visitors can swim in the lake, rent a small boat, or relax at the picnic area. The trail also connects to bigger adventures, including Black Elk Peak, Sunday Gulch, and Little Devil's Tower all have trailheads along the Sylvan Lake Shore Trail.
