An out-and-back 2.1 mile hike to local caves, a swimming hole, creek crossings, stone bridge, and wildflowers — hidden gem near Rapid City, South Dakota.

About

One of the Black Hills' most rewarding easy hikes, the Creek Caves Trail packs a lot of adventure into just 2.1 miles. This out-and-back trail near Rapid City follows Spring Creek into Black Hills National Forest, passing impressive cave structures close to the river along with creek crossings and a stone bridge. Highlights include beautiful caves, stunning views, and a great swimming hole — making it a favorite warm-weather destination for families and hikers looking to cool off. Depending on the season, creek waters can range from knee-deep to low, and wildflowers add color along the route. The trail runs mostly downhill on the way in, so expect a bit of a climb on the return. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and the trail can be rough and slick in spots. Dogs are welcome on leash. It's a local favorite that delivers far beyond its modest length.
