Crazy Horse Memorial

Crazy Horse Memorial, located in the Black Hills near Custer, is one of the largest mountain carving projects in the world and an ongoing tribute to Lakota leader Crazy Horse. Begun in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, the massive sculpture is still in progress and is designed to honor Native American culture and heritage. Visitors can view the carving from the main viewing plaza and explore the Indian Museum of North America, the Native American Educational and Cultural Center, and additional exhibits that share history, art, and traditions of Indigenous peoples. Seasonal programs and cultural demonstrations add depth to the experience. Just a short drive from Mount Rushmore, the memorial offers a meaningful and educational stop that highlights both history and living culture in the Black Hills.
