Cook Lake Trail

Nestled in the northwestern corner of Black Hills National Forest near Sundance, Wyoming, Cook Lake Recreation Area is a quiet gem that rewards visitors willing to make the drive. The Cook Lake Trail is an easy 1.5-mile loop that circles the lake, featuring some stairs and a stepping-stone crossing of Beaver Creek. Wildlife viewing is a highlight — ducks, geese, osprey, blue heron, and bald eagles are commonly spotted along the shoreline. In the shallows, large white amur fish (distant relatives of carp introduced to control aquatic vegetation) are often visible near the surface. The lake supports populations of rainbow and brown trout, a variety of sunfish, and catfish, making it a popular fishing destination. Floating docks make fishing accessible, and the calm waters and surrounding forest create an exceptionally tranquil setting.
