Cook Lake
About
One of Black Hills National Forest's best-kept secrets, Cook Lake Recreation Area is tucked away from the busy central Black Hills, offering fewer crowds and a more peaceful nature experience. Located about 15 miles north of Sundance, WY and 31 miles northwest of Spearfish, SD. It sits at an elevation of 4,749 feet and rewards those willing to drive the final miles of gravel road with a genuine hidden gem.
Cook Lake supports rainbow and brown trout along with sunfish and catfish, and floating docks give anglers easy access to the water. Non-motorized boating and kayaking are permitted, and visitors report tubing, swimming, and even a rope swing adding to the fun. The campground sits on a hillside above the lake with picnic areas lining the shoreline, an accessible pier and picnic area, and walk-in access for small non-motorized boats. Campsites accommodate RVs up to 60 feet, and prices start at $28 per night.
