Coal Ridge Trailhead

Coal Ridge Trailhead is located approximately 35 miles southwest of Custer in the southern Black Hills, providing access to the Coal Ridge trail system, a 2.5-mile scenic loop open to OHVs 62 inches or less in width. A motorized trail permit is required, and an on-site bulletin board offers maps and information for visitors. This is a lightly used corner of the Black Hills, and the trails wind into Red Canyon, where riders can spot a variety of historical remnants including an old schoolhouse, a ranch homestead, old cabins, and a former stage stop, all set against dramatic red canyon walls. The area sits within the Hell Canyon Ranger District, one of the more remote and rugged sections of Black Hills National Forest, making it a worthwhile destination for OHV riders looking to escape the busier trail systems to the north. Motorized trail permits can be purchased at the Hell Canyon Ranger District office in Newcastle, Wyoming, or at the Forest Supervisor's Office in Custer.
