Cliff Swallow Trailhead

The Cliff Swallow Trail is a 3.7-mile loop in Black Hills National Forest, named for the cliff swallows that nest in limestone bluffs above Beaver Creek. Look for their distinctive gourd-shaped mud nests tucked into the rocky outcroppings below the ridge. The trail offers exceptional wildlife viewing. White-tailed deer, elk, and turkey are commonly spotted, while blue herons, beaver, and water dippers frequent Beaver Creek below. Turkey vultures ride thermal drafts overhead, and mountain lions, though rarely seen, also inhabit the area. The upper portion of the trail passes through sections of ferns and provides views of Cook Lake, while the lower trail follows the stream with scenic spots ideal for photography. The trail is located near Cook Lake in the northern Black Hills, not far from Alva, Wyoming, making it a great add-on for visitors exploring the Bear Lodge area. Plan for about 1.5 and 3 hours.
