Center Lake

Center Lake sits at the geographic heart of Custer State Park at 4,758 feet elevation, surrounded by pine-covered hills and within easy reach of the park's most popular landmarks — the Wildlife Loop, Needles Highway, and Sylvan Lake. Same-day reservations accepted, opening at 6 a.m. mountain time each morning — making it a lifesaver for last-minute travelers. The campground offers 71 sites across an upper and lower loop, including 23 tent-only sites. Lower loop sites closest to the lake fill fastest. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. Vault toilets and hot showers are on site. No electrical hookups are available. Sites start at $16 per night for tent-only; a $20 park entrance fee applies per vehicle. The lake has a swim beach, boat dock, and fishing access — bass, perch, and panfish are common. Kayaks and paddleboards are popular on the no-wake lake. A non-profit youth camping area sits on the east side of the lake. Hiking trails branch directly from the campground, and interpretive programs run during summer.
