Custer State Park: Cathedral Spires Trailhead

The Cathedral Spires Trailhead, located along Needles Highway in Custer State Park, provides access to one of the most iconic hikes in the Black Hills. The trail (Trail #4) leads hikers through a rugged landscape of towering granite spires, narrow rock corridors, and forested slopes. The hike is about 1.5 miles one way (3 miles round trip) and is considered moderately challenging, with steady elevation gain and rocky terrain. Along the way, hikers are rewarded with dramatic views of the needle-like rock formations that give the trail its name. This area is also popular for rock climbing and photography. Limited roadside parking is available at the trailhead, and the location along Needles Highway makes it easy to combine with other scenic stops in the park.
