Big Rock Park

Big Rock Park is 73 acres of undeveloped Black Hills terrain tucked right into the city of Custer, and it delivers far more than its modest city-park reputation suggests. The park is home to the Custer Skywalk, an in-town nature trail that climbs from downtown to the top of the park, where the Big Rock Observation Point rewards hikers with sweeping views of the surrounding Black Hills. The 18-hole disc golf course winds entirely through Ponderosa pine trees and granite rock outcroppings, with all par-3 holes averaging about 275 feet — free to play, with course maps available at the Custer Visitor Center. Pageant Hill, the park's 15-acre centerpiece, is a beloved sledding hill in winter, the site of the July 4th fireworks, and the longtime home of the Gold Discovery Days Pageant. The iconic lighted Custer sign, installed in 1945 by the Custer Women's Civic Club, glows each evening from the ridge, with a star added during the Christmas season.
